They Call Him Crazy, by John Cloud.

Rodney Yoder is a jerk.
He is preternaturally rude. He sues people constantly. He abused the two women who put up with him. And he has allegedly written scores of letters to public figures that talk of slaughtering them in dreadful ways. Yodder is not is prison for these offences but at a hospital, Chester Mental Health Center. Doctor's who have  chatted with him have found no evidence of psychosis bur only a justifiably angry man. The court proceeding will be extraordinary not only because it could finally liberate a man once described in court as one of Illinois' most dangerous mental patients but also because the entire field of psychiatry will go on trial.Yoder plans to call experts to testify that "mentally ill" is merely a term we use to describe socially unacceptable people and that any medical field that can hold a man for more than a decade and not improve his life must be a failure.

In the novel, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey, a character named Randle McMurphy also portrayed as crazy angry man( just like Yodder ) who is sent to Oregon asylum, instead of being sent to prison.  He loves to drink and gamble, he has a bad temper and also has been charged with statutory rape, for these reasons he was not acceptable for society and was put into a mental health center.  At the asylum he is considered a dangerous mental patient, who actually just wanted to have a good time. He never got out, he died in his bed, because he was unacceptable for society. In the US alone, about 22,000 people are held against their will in state psychiatric hospitals.
